Our projects support children and young people facing hardship in Ghana, from improving access to education to offering practical support and moments of joy. We’re starting small, listening to communities and developing work that we hope can continue for years to come.
The meaning behind our project names
Our projects take their names from Adinkra symbols, a visual language rooted in Akan culture in Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire. These symbols communicate values, proverbs and ideas about life, relationships and the world around us. You can see them throughout everyday life in Ghana, on clothing, jewellery, pottery, buildings and logos, carrying cultural meaning across generations. More about Adinkra symbols.
For Afua Collective, these names connect our projects to Ghanaian heritage and the values we want to bring to our work.
Project Aya
This project focuses on improving access to education for children in rural Ghana. It was inspired by the founder’s experience teaching in Busua, where she learned about the barriers children face in accessing education.
Project Akoma
This project brings Christmas gifts to children at the Save Them Young orphanage in Tema, in Ghana’s Greater Accra Region, contributing to a festive celebration filled with fun and joy.
