Akoma means “heart”. In Ghanaian Adinkra symbolism, it represents love and goodwill. For Project Akoma, it honours the dedication of the women caring for the children at Save Them Young orphanage and reflects the care we want to bring to our support.

Project Akoma brings Christmas gifts to the 70 children at the Save Them Young orphanage in Tema, in Ghana’s Greater Accra Region. It grew from the founder’s visit, where she saw the challenges facing the children and the dedication of the women caring for them.

Caring for 70 children means meeting many everyday needs. Alongside those essentials, we believe there should also be room for play, celebration and the excitement of opening a Christmas gift.

Our aim is to provide a gift for every child. Working with the orphanage’s caregivers, we will identify suitable gifts for different ages and interests, helping us choose things the children will enjoy and use. Depending on the funds available, these could include:

• Toys and games.
• Books and creative materials.
• Gifts suited to older children’s interests.

By planning with the people who know the children best, we want to make sure gifts are thoughtfully chosen and everyone is included.
