Meet the Founder

Hi, I’m Jessica, also known by my Ghanaian name, Ekua. I’m the founder of Afua Collective, a nonprofit initiative named after my lovely grandma. You can read more about the story behind the name on Our Story page.

By day, I’m a digital project manager. I also freelance for an amazing refugee charity supporting displaced women and children, and by night, I’m a DJ. You could say I’m a busy woman!

Through everything I do, social justice and equality are at the heart of what matters to me. Whether it’s supporting working-class and Global Majority communities, improving social mobility or making sure people feel represented, these are the issues I care deeply about.

I’ve gained a wide range of experience through work, volunteering and mentoring. Some examples include tutoring working-class children in maths during lockdown to help them catch up, teaching maths to refugee children, working with numerous charities and non-profits to make arts and culture more accessible, and mentoring young Black girls facing social and economic barriers.

In 2026, I decided to bring that same energy to a place I care about dearly: Ghana. It’s where my heritage and roots lie, and I wanted my work to reflect that connection. That’s why I founded Afua Collective.

There are many other social issues and projects I care about and hope to explore in the future. For now, we’re starting small, taking time to develop our projects carefully so the support we offer can last.

In 2027, I’ll be donating 50% of my DJ profits to Afua Collective as part of my 2027 pledge. Alongside donations, this is my way of helping our projects become more sustainable and continue in the long term. If you’d like to be part of this, please get in touch to collaborate or make a donation. If you’re unable to contribute, sharing our work with someone who might be interested would mean a lot.

Medaase (thank you)!

Jess
